Valpak and WRAP Partner to Research Paper and Card Packaging Flows
Friday, August 14, 2015
Cloud Sustainability are excited about the new collaboration between one of our key clients, Valpak, and the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) to research paper and card packaging flows in the UK.
The announcement follows a number of successful projects that have already been undertaken by Valpak on the market flow of glass, metals and plastic packaging. Such projects have been hugely influential in steering Defra’s policy and target development in this area, as well as fulfilling the EU requirements for reporting recycling performance for the UK.
The new paper and card flow project aims to provide the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) with robust and independent updated estimates of the amount of paper and card packaging placed on the market (POM), and the amount of this packaging that is recycled, recovered or sent to landfill in the UK for the period between 2014 and 2020.
In order to help achieve the objectives of the work, Valpak has established a steering group made of industry, Defra and Environment Agency members to oversee and provide insights into the outputs.
Simon Weston of the Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI) commented that "The paper industry has for a long time been a leading material in recycling and this work will provide valuable insight not only into the amount of material in the UK but also help identify where improvements can be made".
The project will report in early 2016.
